The so called 'treated' ones receive a fine layer of preservative, but underneath they rot away merrily and last just 10 years at most. We recently had to completely replace a section that was relaid in new wood only in 2006.
For this reason I woud be happy with concrete. You only see the tops, and at Broadway they will be covered in pine needles and engine oil.For me that isn't worth a complete relay between the platforms 10 years hence. Bullhead yes, though. That you can see.Jo https://www.blogger.com/profile/05480195769830116100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-91414596110182763952017-07-23T09:42:48.175+01:002017-07-23T09:42:48.175+01:00When I first joined BR, I was told when walking on...When I first joined BR, I was told when walking on the line, "Don't walk ON the sleepers - use the ballast", but everybody does; and concrete sleepers are less slippery to walk on than wooden ones. Having said that, I too would like to see wooden sleepers between the platforms. I know that the Southern Railway was very keen on concrete so concrete sleepers at Horsted Keynes might not be too out of place. However, wooden sleepers cover all the heritage time periods I guess.Toddingtontedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02470051178926426104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-54894748583408106512017-07-23T08:49:14.269+01:002017-07-23T08:49:14.269+01:00I hope they are wooden sleepers through the statio...I hope they are wooden sleepers through the station. The concrete ones in the Bluebells Horsted Keynes relay between platfdorms 2 and 3 detract from the period feel IMHO.
This is a very exciting period for blog followers as each new detail turns a building site into a railway. (Blame Global warming?). Great progress today guys. As soon as you link up the tracks through the platform to the main line, you could bring the mess coach up. It would be secure at the station site. Then you could have, (what I call), a real lunch in comfort. Aaah. Regards, Paul.St Blazey 1925https://www.blogger.com/profile/16697444840076235191noreply@blogger.com
