But with only four trains a day it almost counts as a Parliamentary service. At times, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates more trains out of Whitby than Northern Rail do.

Northern has always claimed they can't improve the service because there's no spare stock, which is a very flimsy excuse as they take delivery of new and refurbished trains. I'm sure they could find another 156 unit (the usual Whitby train these days) if they tried really hard. I think the truth of the matter is that they don't think the service is very important.

There's also the issue of the signalling at Whitby - there isn't any, which is why NYMR departures out of Whitby grind to a shuddering halt every few hundred yards as staff operate points by hand. There's no money for signalling, apparently, although a very economical proposal was put forward some time ago which would have created a new Grosmont-Whitby block section, controlled by the NYMR's signal box.

In some ways the Esk Valley line is marketed like a heritage railway, which I think is a case of making a virtue out of necessity. But the support group has helped to drive a massive increase in ridership. It makes me wonder just how successful the line could be if Northern actually took an interest in it.

http://www.eskvalleyrailway.co.uk

. As this service then takes the school pupils home from Whitby it could well be a Sprinter DMU.
10.30 from Brum has far too tight a connection at Darlington, in view of the infrequent services to Whitby from Middlesbrough, if the XC is late. Need to push to transfer onto the 09.30 if at all poss', using the 5 min connection at Darlington as being impossible to be met.
David Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11408903687633353630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-74982726150569895402018-05-25T14:31:33.839+01:002018-05-25T14:31:33.839+01:00This shows you how! https://www.youtube.com/watch?...This shows you how! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3um2llLYZ4Marcus Sladenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-46441455388991644102018-05-25T14:23:03.020+01:002018-05-25T14:23:03.020+01:00ISTR they used one of the low-loaders that did the...ISTR they used one of the low-loaders that did the guest loco deliveries.

Noel
jnchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14231054273422828946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-66666071895657260572018-05-25T12:53:12.738+01:002018-05-25T12:53:12.738+01:00I'm curious.
