I've travelled past those sleepers for many years and it's great to see the pile diminishing and the sleepers ending up where they are supposed to be! Lovely shots of 7903 too with the Cathedrals Express. Always good to see a loco of the correct type and livery carrying this headboard. As I'm sure Blog Readers know, the Cathedrals Express was a BR (WR) named train, not a GWR invention. The Cathedrals Express was introduced on 16 September 1957 and was operated six days a week until 12 June 1965. It departed Hereford at 7.45 with the return service leaving Paddington at 16.45. Coaching stock was usually in the GWR style chocolate and cream livery, not the BR standard maroon of this period. The train was not a particularly fast one as there were a number of stops, including another 2 cathedral cities at Worcester and Oxford. This was in fact the last named express with a headboard to be introduced on British Railways in the steam era. At least one contemporary railway photographer of note remarked that the headboard was "absurdly florid." It is certainly distinctive! The correct headcode for 1960 at least (A22)is being displayed. Great attention to detail there! (The Cornishman was C33 amongst others). Regarding line speeds, I always understood that anything over 30mph for a 28xx was really making life difficult on the footplate whereas the LMS 8Fs were more comfortable at slightly higher speeds - but I'm happy to be corrected by those who went there and did it!Toddingtontedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02470051178926426104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-91151956587566269402017-06-01T14:45:04.029+01:002017-06-01T14:45:04.029+01:00Hi,Jo!. The 9fs,were pretty nifty runners, despite having 5,foot driving wheels!.Probally,if the crew, wanted an early finish, they'd be hustling an iron ore train along,at around 40mph!.The 2800,2-8-0s were quite fast runners,too1.I,noticed,when I,went by the sleeper depot,on Sunday, how considerably smaller, the stack was getting!.I,hope you have enough,to complete the extension!. A long enough stretch of plain line, however, like Toddington to Broadway might have possibilities. I believe the GCR makes useful income out of this from commercial testing of non-heritage equipment, away from NR constraints.
MarkPhaaschhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02747852507990028985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-26670076130770570482017-06-01T09:58:50.253+01:002017-06-01T09:58:50.253+01:00Hi Lee,

Most Heritage railways (according to what I was told) are restricted to a maximum of 25mph when carrying passengers - the GCR included - as they operate under light railway orders. It's probably down to the fact they mostly have single track.Lee Williamsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8914276256646518799.post-47050432842151799182017-05-31T23:56:43.532+01:002017-05-31T23:56:43.532+01:00Great pictures Jo. The quality of this track work is so high I wonder if it would be possible to get a dispensation for an increased line speed say between Toddington & Broadway as I believe the Great Central has one? Certainly the WSR had a dispensation for DMU crew training between Bishops Lydeard & and Norton Fitzwarren at one time although I am not sure if it is still available since the introduction of the stone waste from Network Rail.

Fantastic blog it makes us all feel involved albeit it at a distance! Thank you for all your hard work.

Regards

Richard SymondsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
